Three Turkish generals have just been arrested for plotting to start a war with Greece. They planned to accomplish this by conducting a series of "false flag" operations, blowing up mosques and museums in Turkey and making it look like Greece was responsible. Their plan also called for Turkish aircraft to conduct "aggressive manoeuvres" over the Aegean to provoke Greece into firing upon them. Once a chaotic atmosphere had been suitably stirred up, the generals would then depose the elected government and assume power.
Given this grotesque tale of primitivism, how is it possible that this preposterous third-world country's application to join the EU is still on track?

A Prime Example of Turkish Culture
In 2010, Istanbul is the European Capital of Culture. The Guardian today reports a prime example of Turkish culture:
a 16-year-old girl killed by being buried alive by her own family for "talking to boys".

Turkey is the Leading Human Rights Violator
This is the official judgement of the European Court of Human Rights in its report on the year 2009.
In total, the court issued 341 rulings against Turkey, far higher than any other state. This represented almost one fifth of the court's unfavourable judgements in total.
Moreover, the human rights situation in Turkey seems to be deteriorating. The number of complaints against it to the ECHR has risen from 2828 in 2007 to 4474 in 2009.
