Turkish Interference in German Politics

Regular readers will no doubt recall a blog post earlier in the year concerning a report in Der Spiegel that the Turkish government was calling on the Turkish diaspora to use its influence to promote the interests of Turkey.

German television recently broadcast a news report about it, featuring some quite dramatic video footage. It shows Erdogan looking almost Hitlerian as he declaims against a map of the world containing a massive Turkey, bloated in red :"We are now the world power Turkey! Other countries don't set the agenda for Turkey. We set the agenda for them!"

Who Lost Turkey?

Excellent analysis of Turkey's descent into Islamic darkness from the Jerusalem post. Of course Israel feels the pangs of regret more keenly than anyone else since they had nurtured fond hopes of having Turkey as an ally. Israel even traded military secrets and technology with the Turks and now regrets it, having concluded that the Turks have now shared those secrets with Israel's enemies, like Syria.

You have to hand it to Turkey’s Islamist leaders. They sure know how to get their way. In the seven years since they first took power, the Islamist AKP party has successfully transformed Turkey from a staunch ally of the US and Israel and a member of NATO into a staunch ally of Iran and a member of NATO.

And that’s not all. Turkey’s Islamist leaders have used the Western language of democracy and freedom not only to abandon the West. They have used that language to destroy the foundations of Turkey’s Western-style secular democracy and transform the governing system of NATO’s sole Muslim member into a hybrid of Putinist autocracy and Iranian theocracy.

On September 12, the AKP took an enormous step toward consolidating its achievements and expanding its power. The Islamist regime won a national plebiscite on constitutional amendments that remove the remaining obstacles to its absolute power.

As a National Review reader noted, the vote was a mockery of democracy. It was held at the end of Ramadan during which the AKP provided 30 consecutive free post- Ramadan fast dinners to voters in key voting districts.

SINCE TAKING office, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his party have used both lawful and unlawful means to intimidate, repress and silence all significant organs of secularist opposition to their rolling Islamic revolution. The media, civil service, police and business community have all been co-opted and intimidated into submission.

According to the Kemalist constitution, the military was the constitutional protector of secular Turkey. It was constitutionally bound to combat all threats to Turkey’s secular regime – including threats posed by political parties and political leaders. Over the past seven years, the AKP has done everything it could to demoralize and criminalize the military’s leadership and eviscerate the military’s constitutional powers and organizational independence. Most recently, President Abdullah Gul began intervening in promotions of generals to block all non-Islamists from acquiring command positions.

The constitutional amendments just passed further emasculate the military, placing it under the jurisdiction of AKP-controlled civilian courts.

In 1980, in accordance with its constitutional responsibility, the military ousted a precursor of the AKP from power in what the West incorrectly characterized as a coup. The new constitutional amendments make the military commanders who ousted the Islamists vulnerable to criminal prosecution for their actions. No doubt, in the near future these generals will be brought into court in shackles and charged with subverting the will of the people.

The message to any general with any thought of removing Erdogan and his colleagues will be crystal clear.

Aside from the chastened military, the only remaining outpost of secular power in Turkey has been the judiciary. In the past, the judiciary has overturned many of the government’s actions that it ruled were unconstitutional and illegal. The new constitutional amendments will work to end judicial independence by giving the government control over judicial appointments. The AKP’s justice minister will also have increased power to open investigations against judges and prosecutors.

European Foreign Ministers Prostrate Themselves in Front of Turkey

Turkey has failed to meet the basic criteria even of the few accession chapters that have been opened to it. So what do our foreign ministers do? Terminate its accession process completely because of unsatisfactory progress? No. William Hague calls for it to be speeded up. Westerwelle says we should look to deepen our relationship with Turkey outside of the accession framework.

Astonishingly, they have even put forward the idea that Turkey should be allowed to sit in on some EU meetings, even though it is not a member.

The Finnish foreign minister, Alexander Stubbs, though, must be considered a candidate for Dhimmi of the year with his ludicrous remark that Turkey was "one of the top five countries in the world today" in terms of foreign policy.

"Arguably, today Turkey is more influential in the world than any of our member states together or separately," Stubb said. "It has a great influence in the Middle East, in the African Horn in the Persian Gulf, in Iran. It's a truly global player and we need to work together with Turkey right now on foreign and security policy."

So Turkey, an authoritarian Islamist cesspit, whose people live in abject poverty, has more weight in the world than all the countries of the European Union, whose combined economy is the largest in the world, whose exports are the largest in the world by far (even Germany alone is only marginally behind China), whose foreign aid contributions are orders of magnitude higher than any other country or set of countries in the world? How insane is this? If Europe lacks influence, it is because it is led by dimwits like Alexander Stubbs, not because it has any inherent lack of power.

France Says Turkey not Safe Destination for Refugees

The French government has officially declared that Turkey is not a safe country for refugees. But its EU application is still progressing. Hello?

It's a little-known fact but EU countries still receive thousands of asylum applications each year from Turks saying they have been mistreated. How is it possible that a country that is still a routine source of asylum applications is even being considered for EU membership? Good question.

Naturally, this new French ruling will make it even more difficult to send any of them home. How wonderful.

Cheerleaders Excluded from Basketball World Championship Games in Turkey

The Basketball World Championships are currently taking place in Turkey. Traditionally, entertainment is provided at the games by troupes of cheerleaders. But in Muslim Turkey that doesn't go down so well. At some games, the cheerleaders have been asked to wear less scanty clothing; at others, they have been asked to absent themselves completely. The latter have included all games attended by senior politicians from the ruling AKP political party.

The presence of cheerleaders at the tournament has caused something of a problem for Turkey, a secular nation which is overwhelmingly Muslim.
Dancers were missing altogether from Turkey's two most recent matches in Ankara. At other matches, officials turned their back in order to avoid viewing the scantily clad cheerleaders and their energetic routines.

Is this a country that belongs in the European Union? No.

Thilo Sarrazin and Germany's Unloved Turks

Bundesbank board member Thilo Sarrazin has provoked an extraordinary furore in Germany with his still-not-yet-published book "Deutschland schafft sich ab" (Germany is unmaking itself). In particular, Sarrazin has drawn attention to the corrosive effect Muslim immigrants (and in Germany that means mostly Turkish immigrants) are having on Germany. One of his key claims is that Turkish immigrants "are making Germany dumber".

Naturally, Sarrazin has been denounced by the bien-pensant media-political elite for daring to say this, and there are now processes underway to remove him from his position at the Bundesbank and from the SPD political party, of which he is a member.

But there is solid scientific evidence reported in respectable mainstream publications to substantiate Sarrazin's point of view. For example, this article (in German) in the widely-respected German newspaper Die Welt reports the results of scientific research which concluded that, on average, Turkish immigrants to Germany had IQ scores 10-15 points below the German average.

The researchers attributed the poor educational performance of Berlin's schoolchildren as a whole to the increasingly high number of Turks living in the area, who were dragging down the achievement averages. They noted that, by contrast, the educational performance of children from a non-immigrant background was higher than ever.

Germany has experienced Turkish immigration on a larger scale than any other European country. Its experience offers us a foretaste of what is to come for the rest of Europe if Turkey gets into the EU.

Turkish Organisation Interferes in European Democratic Process

A Turkish organisation based in Germany has issued a statement demanding that Geert Wilders not be involved in forming any coalition government in the Netherlands.

On its website the Union of European Turkish Democrats (UETD) declares that it "focuses on the problems of Turks in Europe". It clearly defines a Turk in racial terms rather than according traditional concepts of nationality.

How extraordinary that such an explicitly racialist organisation should demand that a democratically-elected politician be excluded from government because of his "intolerance".

Gaddafi Predicts Turkish Accession to EU Will Convert Europe to Islam

Libyan leader Colonel Gaddafi has called for Europe to convert to Islam, saying it is "the last religion", and predicting that the conversion process will begin once Turkey joins the European Union.

Speaking before an invited audience of 500 female models, Gaddafi said that "Islam should become the religion of all of Europe...Islam is the last religion and if we are to have a single faith then it has to be in Mohammed".

In other remarks made during his visit to Italy, he demanded €5 billion in "protection money" each year for keeping the African hordes out of Europe. If he didn't get it, he said, Europe might "turn black" and "become another Africa".

"Tomorrow Europe might no longer be European and even black as there are millions who want to come in," he said.

"We don't know if Europe will remain an advanced and united continent or if it will be destroyed, as happened with the barbarian invasions".

Gaddafi made similar remarks a few years ago:

"We have 50 million Muslims in Europe. There are signs that Allah will grant Islam victory in Europe - without swords, without guns, without conquests. The fifty million Muslims of Europe will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades.

"Allah mobilizes the Muslim nation of Turkey, and adds it to the European Union."

[…]

"That's another 50 million Muslims. There will be 100 million Muslims in Europe. Albania, which is a Muslim country, has already entered the E.U."

[…]

"Bosnia, which is a Muslim country, has already entered the E.U. Fifty percent of its citizens are Muslims."
